Every essay type gets its own rubric
A "Why Us?" essay is judged completely differently than a personal statement. Instead of one generic checklist, the engine grades each essay on a rubric built for that exact prompt.

What these numbers actually mean
Most first drafts land in the 70s, which at competitive schools puts you at a disadvantage. The essays that break into the 86+ range, the ones that actually start helping your application, almost never win on grammar. They win on the things a real admissions officer weighs, a clear central message, an authentic voice, and genuine reflection.
That is exactly what your score measures. The engine was built with former admissions officers and the criteria in published admissions guidance, including the Common App's essay prompts and the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC). The distribution above is that system in practice, a full cycle of real essays naturally distributing the way a real reader would, and it holds up cycle after cycle.
Dataset methodology: figures reflect the first-review scores of 245,931 unique essays graded between August 2025 and July 2026. A first review is the first scored version of an essay; later revisions of the same essay are excluded, so each essay counts once. All data is aggregated and anonymized.
