Question 1 Easy

A particle's position at time tt is (x(t),y(t))(x(t),y(t)). The function x(t)x(t) is decreasing on 0<t<40<t<4 and increasing on 4<t<74<t<7. The function y(t)y(t) is increasing on 0<t<20<t<2 and decreasing on 2<t<72<t<7.

Which describes the particle's motion as tt increases on 4<t<74<t<7?

AUp and to the right
BDown and to the left
CUp and to the left
DDown and to the right

Topic 4.3: Parametric Functions and Rates of Change

Learning Objective: 4.3.A

Identify key characteristics of a parametric planar motion function that are related to direction and rate of change.

Essential Knowledge: 4.3.A.1

As the parameter increases, the direction of planar motion of a particle can be analyzed in terms of xx and yy independently. If x(t)x(t) is increasing or decreasing, the direction of motion is to the right or left, respectively. If y(t)y(t) is increasing or decreasing, the direction of motion is up or down, respectively.

Essential Knowledge: 4.3.A.2

At any given point in the plane, the direction of planar motion may be different for different values of tt.

Essential Knowledge: 4.3.A.3

The same curve in the plane can be parametrized in different ways and can be traversed in different directions with different parametric functions.

Essential Knowledge: 4.3.A.4

Over a given interval [t1,t2][t_1, t_2] within the domain, the average rate of change can be computed for x(t)x(t) and y(t)y(t) independently. The ratio of the average rate of change of yy to the average rate of change of xx gives the slope of the graph between the points on the curve corresponding to t1t_1 and t2t_2, so long as the average rate of change of x(t)≠0x(t) \ne 0.
